Ubud became the sacred spirit of Bali hundreds of years ahead of the tourism based activities that the southern part of Bali have become renowned for.
Most likely Ubud's future as a point of convergence became sealed in the eighth century, when a roaming priest from Java, came across an ideal spot for meditating, where the eastern and western tributaries belonging to the Wos River meet up in Campuhan. From 1850 to 1880 Ubud's positioning as a centre of the arts was further developed and designed under the reign of King Tjokorde Rai Batur, being a member of the Satriya family, who had previously been important advocates of the arts and culture across the centuries.
