Hong Kong International Airport to Kowloon and Hong Kong Central

Our recommended (and the quickest, most efficient) way to get into the city is via the sleek, sparkling new Airport Express Line, which provides comfortable, business-class seating and seat-back TVs with flight information, news, and entertainment programs. The train's route takes you across the coast of Lantau Island, over the Kap Shui bridge, through the viaducts on Ma Wan Island, across the massive Tsing Ma suspension bridge and down the fully-reclaimed land of West Kowloon before finally plunging under Victoria Harbour and rising up on Exchange Square in Central. One of the largest engineering projects ever, the railway/highway line is one of the few in the world built as a dedicated link between an airport and a city center.

Trains run every four to eight minutes between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. and take 18 minutes to reach Kowloon Station (near hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui and Yau Ma Tei) and 23 minutes to reach Hong Kong Station in the Central District on Hong Kong Island. Fares are HK$80 (USD 10.50) to Kowloon and HK$90 (USD 11.50) to Central. Both Kowloon and Hong Kong stations are served by free MTR shuttle buses and by taxi service. The Hong Kong station is not far from Central's MTR subway station. In addition, more than 15 hotels provide free shuttle service between Hong Kong or Kowloon Station to their hotel. MTR free shuttle bus numbers, times and routes are given below.

Taxi

To KOWLOON (30-45 min) ~HK$300/~US$38.50; To CENTRAL (35-50 min) ~HK$365/~US$47.00 (as of Feb., 2001)
Certainly the easiest way into the city is to jump into one of the hundreds of metered, air-conditioned taxi cabs awaiting you at the airport and go. With the train, you'll need to get off and get a shuttle bus or a subway to get to your final destination. The taxi driver can, of course, hand your bags to your bellman! But at a price. Though relatively cheap for short distances, a Hong Kong taxi can be an expensive option for the long trip in from the airport. Figure around HK$300 (US$38.50) to Tsim Sha Tsui and HK$365 to Central (US$47.00), more to other parts of Hong Kong Island. Plus, they'll want another HK$5 for each piece of luggage. This price does include all bridge tolls and tunnel charges.

Hotel Transfer

To KOWLOON (30-45 min) ~HK$300-1,000; To CENTRAL (35-50 min) ~HK$400-1,000 (US$38.50 to US$128.00)
Most hotels offer a transfer service from the airport directly to their hotel. While very convenient, this tends to get a bit pricey, as well. For example, you can get a hotel Mercedes-Benz to take you to the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay for HK$550 or a Rolls Royce Silver Spur will hum you to the Peninsula for a cool HK$700. If you'd like to look into this option, please let us know at the time of booking.

Public Bus

To KOWLOON (30-45 min) HK$23-33 / ~US$3.00-4.25; To CENTRAL (35-50 min) HK$21-HK$40 / ~US$3.00-5.10
There are two main bus lines serving the airport: Citybus Cityflyer "A" buses and Citybus "E" (or "external") buses. The Cityflyer is a bit more expensive, more comfortable, and makes less stops than the "E" buses. The A21 will take you to Tsim Sha Tsui for only HK$33 and stops at the TST MTR, Middle/Nathan road intersection, New World Center, and the Mody/Chatham road intersection. Bus A11 runs across Hong Kong Island from Central to Causeway Bay making various stops and will cost you around HK$40. For rock-bottom prices, you can take one of Citybus' other routes. The N21 will take you on a journey ending at the Star Ferry pier for only HK$23 or, if you're heading to Hong Kong Island take the E11 for HK$21.
