Sha Tin Hotels

Sha Tin is located in the New Territories, just north of the Kowloon Peninsula. Built on land reclaimed from the sea, the main residential areas surround the Shing Mun river and have been, for many years, a proud example of Hong Kong's ability to build a new, modern city where none existed before.

Popular hotels in Sha Tin include the Hyatt Regency Sha Tin and the Regal Riverside Hotel. The area boasts a world-class horse racing track at Sha Tin Racecourse; a huge, popular shopping complex (of course) at Sha Tin New Town; and one of Hong Kong's finest academic institutions, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Cultural attractions include the 10,000 Buddhas Monestery and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Shing Mun River

The Shing Mun River runs through the center of Sha Tin, rising at the reservoir just southwest of the city and flowing into Tolo Harbour. It is lined with many places of fun and relaxation including Sha Tin Central Park, Yuen Wo Playground, as well as Penfold Park (surrounded by the racecourse).

Sha Tin Racecourse

Built in 1978, Sha Tin Racecourse has more than doubled its seating capacity since then in response to its huge popularity. The racecourse lies on the banks of the Shing Mun River and encircles its own park! During the 2008 Olympics, it was used for some of the Equestrian events.

New Town Plaza

No new, modern Hong Kong city built from the ground up would be complete without a huge shopping complex. Crammed with theaters, restaurants, and brand-name shopping, New Town Plaza sits right at the Sha Tin MTR station. Grab the kids and head to Snoopy's World on the third floor for a unique theme playground based on, you guessed it, the popular comic-strip beagle.

Chinese University of Hong Kong

Consistently ranked by independent global ranking services as one of leading universities in the world, CUHK is at the mouth of the Shing Mun River where it empties in to Sha Tin Hoi. It is easily reached by the MTR's University station on the East Rail Line.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

This popular Buddhist Temple is just west of the center of the city and offers great views, in addition to 12,850 statues of Buddha. Worth a visit.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Next to Sha Tin Central Park, and on the Shing Mun River, is the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. This is one of Hong Kong's more modern museums and offers many events and activities year-round.
